India’s retaliatory strike, codenamed Operation Sindoor, against Pakistan was a massive success as the IAF destroyed 6 Pakistan aircraft and several military bases. While Islamabad didn’t manage to secure a major victory on the battlefield, it is now resorting to petty retaliation.
In the wake of India’s successful Operation Sindoor and New Delhi putting Indus Waters Treaty into abeyance, Pakistan seems to be resorting to petty measures by targeting the Indian High Commission staff in Islamabad. The move comes amid increased tensions between the two countries.
Pakistan’s measure against the Indian embassy staff in Islamabad include cutting the supply of essential items to increasing the surveillance.
Pakistan’s petty retaliation: How is Islamabad targeting Indian diplomats?
Following a military setback in the recent conflict with India, Pakistan is learnt to have cut essential supplies for Indian High Commission staff, including gas and water. Further, newspaper deliveries to the embassy staff were also stopped in June.
According to a report in CNN-News18, gas supply from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd has been deliberately withheld, while the local gas cylinder vendors who were earlier supplying fuel and heating have, have also been told by Pakistani authorities not to sell to Indian staff. That’s not it.
Pak authorities have also cut the water supply to Indian High Commission, as their contracted supplier for clean, mineral water has been blocked from making any deliveries. Additionally, other water vendors in Islamabad too have been directed to not give supplies, thereby causing inconvenience for staff.
Pakistan resorting to petty retaliation?
A top government sources has called Pakistan’s latest move against Indian diplomats a “petty retaliation”, adding described it as “deliberate, premeditated, and in breach of the Vienna Convention.” The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations guarantees a smooth functioning of embassies along with the safety and dignity of diplomatic personnel.
What does India plan to do in this regard?
Taking note of the recent developments, New Delhi plans to respond with measures against Pakistani diplomats, as the Indian High Commission staff is facing increased surveillance, with no proper supply of gas and water, disrupting their day-to-day life. Further, newspaper deliveries to the Indian High Commission and residences of Indian diplomats have also been stopped.
