Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), met Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Tokyo as part of his four-day official visit from 30 July to 2 August 2025. Their meeting focused on strengthening bilateral defence ties, particularly in the maritime domain.

Both sides discussed expanding cooperation in defence technology, industry partnerships and naval training and personnel exchanges. A joint statement said the two nations were committed to addressing emerging regional security challenges, reinforcing their “Special Strategic and Global Partnership.”

What activities has Admiral Tripathi undertaken during the visit?

Admiral Tripathi toured JMSDF’s Mogami-class frigate Kumano, where he was briefed on the ship’s stealth features, multi-mission capabilities and advanced maritime surveillance systems.

He also visited the Japan United Marine Shipyard (JUMS), learning about Japan’s shipbuilding expertise, automation and precision engineering. In addition, he toured JMSDF’s Fleet Headquarters and Maritime Operations Center, which manages Japan’s maritime domain awareness and operational planning.

Why is this visit significant for India-Japan ties?

The visit takes place in the context of growing strategic alignment between India and Japan in the Indo-Pacific region. High-level engagements such as these reaffirm the two countries’ shared commitment to regional peace, maritime security and closer defence cooperation.

Officials said Admiral Tripathi’s interactions with senior Japanese naval commanders are expected to deepen operational understanding and strengthen naval interoperability between the two nations.
