As many as eight people were killed and over 27 others injured in an accidental explosion at the Nowgam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar late on Friday (November 14, 2025) night, when personnel were extracting samples from a massive cache of explosives seized in the ‘white-collar’ terror module case, according to media reports.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted officials as saying that the blast took place inside the police station compound while a team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and forensic experts were handling explosive material that had been transported from Faridabad in Haryana for detailed examination.
They said the accidental blast happened late Friday night, killing more than seven people and injuring over 27, mostly policemen and forensic officials who were part of the sampling and documentation exercise. Several of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition.
The explosion ripped through a section of the police station complex, damaged vehicles parked in the yard and triggered a fire that was brought under control after fire tenders and additional rescue teams were rushed to the spot, reports stated.
The explosives under examination formed part of a large haul recovered recently from rented premises in Faridabad. Nearly 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate and other bomb-making materials were recovered from two rented rooms in Dhauj and Fatehpur Taga villages on Faridabad’s outskirts.
The premises had been rented by Dr Muzammil Shakil, 35, a Pulwama-based physician who taught at Al-Falah Medical College.
Preliminary assessment of the Nowgam blast suggests that there was no attack from outside and the incident was being treated as an operational accident within an ongoing terror investigation.
Senior officers of Jammu and Kashmir Police have ordered a high-level inquiry into the circumstances of the blast.
