On the orders of US President Donald Trump, the American Central Command on Friday (March 13, 2026) bombed Iran’s Kharg Island to destroy military targets, even as reports emerged that the US military deployed its stealth B-2 bombers to strike Tehran in the war.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social, said he directed the US Central Command to carry out a bombing raid to hit Kharg Island’s military assets.
“Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” the US President said in the post, adding that he had “chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island.”
He threatened to reconsider the decision not to target the oil infrastructure on the island if Iran interfered with the maritime cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran took under its control and has blockaded cargo vessels from transiting through the narrow water body.
“However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision,” Trump wrote.
An hour later, he posted again that “Iran had plans of taking over the entire Middle East, and completely obliterating Israel. JUST LIKE IRAN ITSELF, THOSE PLANS ARE NOW DEAD!”
He told reporters later, while boarding Air Force One for Florida, that his military campaign against Iran would last “as long as necessary.” Asked for a military operations timeframe, he said: “I can’t tell you that. I mean, I have my own idea. I won’t give you a time, but we are way ahead of schedule.”
On his “unconditional surrender” demand on Iran, Trump said, “To me it means very simply that we are in a position of dominance that nobody has seen before, whether or not they’re able to say the words.”
Though not spelled out, American media platforms have previously reported that the US may attempt to seize the Kharg Island from Iran, which could prove a major geopolitical and economic risk.
The five-mile-long coral island, located 15 miles off the Iranian mainland in the northern Persian Gulf, was untouched by the US-Israeli military operations against Iran since February 28 until the Friday (March 13) bombing.
To seize the island, the US and Israel would need to put boots on the ground for a land warfare operation that both nations are currently reluctant to do. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth had previously refused to rule out deploying American ground forces in Iran.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command said its B-2 stealth bombers carried out a mission targeting Iranian capabilities as part of an ongoing operation.
“B-2 stealth bombers take off to conduct a mission during Operation Epic Fury, delivering long-range fire to not only eliminate the threat from the Iranian regime today, but also eliminate their ability to rebuild in the future,” CENTCOM said in a social media post, sharing visuals of the bombers.
Earlier, Hegseth told reporters that all of Iran’s defence companies would be destroyed “soon, and very soon.” He said, “Today will be yet again the highest volume of strikes that America has put over the skies of Iran and Tehran. The number of sorties and number of bomber pulses, the highest yet, are ramping up and only up. And quantity has a quality of its own as we continue to ramp up.”
So far, around 1,300 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and 13 American soldiers, have been killed in the two-week war between the US-Israel coalition and Iran since February 28.
